The 2026 lineup (and what each is really for)
- Plugsky AI Video Studio — the workflow-first option: AI Director plans a storyboard from your brief, each shot renders from your reference image, shots auto-assemble, then voiceover and captions finish it. Per-second pricing ($9/120s, $29/480s, $99/1800s) with character sheets and brand kits included. Currently in public beta.
- Sora (OpenAI) — the cultural default. Excellent cinematic single clips inside ChatGPT plans; weakest as a volume production system, and access/pricing depend on your ChatGPT tier.
- Runway — the professional suite. Gen-4.5 quality is high, the editor is deep, brand kits and voice cloning arrive on Pro. Credits from $12/mo (annual) with 625–9,500 credits — but 5 seconds of Gen-4.5 costs 60 credits, so seconds add up quickly.
- Pika — effects and social fun. Model-agnostic app store (Seedance 2.5, Wan 3.0, MiniMax H3), free plan for experiments. Commercial license starts at the $35/mo Creator tier — check before publishing client work.
- Kling — stylized motion specialist with daily free credits and strong dance/action results. Region availability and modes vary; credits are the pricing unit.
- Veo (Google) — cinematic fidelity with native audio, bundled into Google AI plans from $19.99/mo. Great hero shots, less built for high-volume iteration.
- Luma / Hailuo — solid mid-tier generators with free tiers and subscriptions from ~$10/mo. Fine for concepts; thinner on multi-shot workflows.

Price per second, charted
Credits, tokens, "generations" — the only unit that compares honestly is dollars per second of finished video. Computed from published rates at publication:
Runway's Standard plan gives 625 credits — 52 seconds of Gen-4.5 per month. Plugsky's Starter gives 120 seconds for $9. Pika's Starter converts to roughly 37 seconds of Seedance 2.5. If your work is minutes, not seconds, per-second plans win by 3–7× on cost.
Category winners

| Best cinematic single clips | Veo / Sora | Highest fidelity hero shots, native audio |
| Best effects & social fun | Pika | App store of effects and models, fast iteration |

Honest limitations
- Plugsky Studio is in public beta. Lip-sync is not yet supported (narration is voiceover over shots), and the deepest model options (1080p, Seedance 2.x) depend on resource packs being enabled. The core workflow — plan, generate, assemble, voice, publish — is live.
- Runway and Pika are credit-based. Costs are predictable only if you track credit burn per second; rollover is limited (Runway Max rolls over one month).
- Sora's access model is bundled — great value if you already pay for ChatGPT, hard to scale as a production pipeline.
- Kling's availability varies by region and its paid plans differ by market.
- Every tool fails renders sometimes. Ask how retries are handled before committing to volume — automatic rescue and retry (as in Plugsky Studio) is the difference between 20 minutes and 2 hours of babysitting.
How we evaluated
- Cost per second computed from published prices — not marketing claims.
- Multi-shot workflow tested with a 4-scene product storyboard: consistency of the product across shots.
- Character consistency tested with a named character across three scenes.
- Finishing — can you ship from the tool (voiceover, captions, aspect ratios) or do you export?
- Licensing and watermarks read from plan documentation.

Which AI video generator is cheapest per second?
At publication: Plugsky AI Video Studio at $0.055–0.075 per second on its packages. Runway works out to roughly $0.23/s (Standard, annual) for Gen-4.5, and Pika $0.27–0.41/s for Seedance 2.5 depending on plan vs top-ups. Always convert credits to dollars per second.
Is Sora better than Runway?
For single cinematic clips inside the ChatGPT ecosystem, Sora is excellent. For professional editing suites and multi-shot control, Runway is deeper. For volume marketing video at low cost per second, workflow studios like Plugsky are built for it. They serve different jobs.
Can I use AI videos commercially?
Usually yes on paid plans, but check the license: Pika's free plan excludes commercial use (Creator $35/mo adds it), free tiers elsewhere add watermarks. Plugsky Studio packages include commercial use.
Do these tools support 9:16 vertical video?
Yes — Plugsky Studio, Runway, Pika and Kling all support 9:16 natively, which matters for TikTok, Reels and Shorts. Generate vertical natively rather than cropping 16:9 to keep full quality.
What is character consistency and why does it matter?
It means the same person, product or mascot looks identical across every shot of a video and across a series. It is the difference between a demo reel and an actual brand campaign. Plugsky's character sheets and Runway's brand kits are the two strongest implementations.
Do AI video generators have APIs?
Plugsky Studio and Runway both offer task-based APIs suited to automation; Pika has a developer platform. See the AI video API guide for the polling pattern and a Python quickstart.
